Summary of duties - The Production Control Engineer supports higher Production Control Engineers and the Fabrication Shop. They are responsible for receiving and issuing material shipped to or from the Fabrication Shop. Initiating new fab order workflows for projects and scheduling impacts according to production needs. Helper (Inside Machinist) - Steel America
Purpose:
Steel America is seeking a Helper to support operations in our Inside Machine Shop at our site in Norfolk, VA.
Job Description:
- Assist machinists with set-up and operation of CNC and/or manual mills and lathes.
- Load and unload trucks and other conveyances.
- Perform duties such as fire watch, assisting welders and technicians, running electrical cable on shore locations, onboard ships, and other vessels as needed.
- Move supplies and materials to proper locations by hand or hand trucks.
- Use basic power tools to include grinders and drills.
- Paint small areas as needed.
- Stack materials for storage.
- Collect refuse and salvageable materials.
- Move heavy pieces of office and shipboard furniture, machinery and equipment.

Selects, aligns, and secures holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories, and materials on machines, such as mills, lathes, jig borers, grinders and shapers.
Calculates and sets controls to regulate machining factors, such as speed, feed, coolant flow, and depth and angle of cut.
Starts and observes machine operation to detect malfunctions or out-of-tolerance machining and adjusts machine controls or control media as required.
Verifies conformance or finished work piece to specifications using precision measuring instruments.
Set up and operates machine on trial run to verify accuracy of machine settings.
Fits and assemble parts into complete assembly, using jigs, fixtures, surface plate, surface table, hand tools and power tools.

Verifies dimensions and alignment of assembly using measuring instruments, such as micrometers, height gauges and gauge blocks.
May install machined replacement parts in mechanisms, machines and equipment and test operation of unit to ensure functionality and performance. Minimum supervision may be required.
Knowledge of machine shop theory and procedures, shop mathematics, machinability of materials and layout techniques.
Blueprint reading, sketches, drawing, manuals, specifications or sample part to determine dimensions and tolerance of finished work piece, sequence of operations and setup requirements.
Measures, marks, scribes dimensions and reference points on material or work piece as guides for subsequent machining.
JOURNEYPERSON 2 (Inside Machinist)
Set up and operates conventional and special purpose machine to fabricate and refurbish machine parts using basic machine shop equipment with working knowledge of machine shop theory and procedures, shop mathematics, layout techniques and blueprint reading with limited supervision.
Experienced in proper operation of the following equipment: turret lathe, boring mill, engine lathe, milling machine, drill press, grinders and use of shop measuring tools.
Should have inside machinist tools to include calipers, indicators, micrometers and cutting tools.
JOURNEYPERSON 1 (Inside Machinist)
Set up and operates conventional and special purpose machine to fabricate and refurbish machine parts using basic machine shop equipment with working knowledge of machine shop theory and procedures, shop mathematics, layout techniques and blueprint reading with supervision.

Position Overview: The role of the Inside Machinist is pivotal in the maintenance and repair of complex machinery, ensuring peak performance and safety. This position demands expertise in reading blueprints, operating various machine tools, and understanding mechanical systems, including engines and hydraulic controls. The technician will also guide junior machinists, manage work assignments, and strictly adhere to safety protocols. This role, which strongly emphasizes collaboration and technical proficiency, is instrumental in driving efficiency and quality in production environments.
Key Responsibilities:
- Must be able to read and comprehend blueprints, drawings, and other technical trade-related documents
- Mechanical ability, manual dexterity, and hand/eye coordination required to perform various projects, per drawings, sketches, and verbal or written instructions
- Skilled in the selection, set-up, and operation of the appropriate tool(s) for a given type of work
- Technical training preferred
- Must be able to work effectively with others
- Must be a steady, reliable worker
- Must be able to comprehend and follow simple instructions
- Must have own tools
- Wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) appropriate to current or daily job duties.
Qualifications & Experience:
- B lueprint reading / technical writing- reports & records
- Heat treating and shrinkage
- Familiarity with measuring tools such as micrometers, height gauges, vernier calipers, and dividing heads
- Operate machine tools in varying tolerances according to need (from (½) half a thousand upwards)
- Maintain and repair the following machines: lathes, bridge port millers, horizontal millers, vertical millers, surfacing machines, drill presses, boring mills and shapers
- Experienced with the use of hoisting and rigging equipment for heavy pieces such as forklifts and chain falls
- Hand scraping of bearings fitted to shafts using bluing
- Gear cutting
- Disassembled parts storage (bag and tag)
- System tolerance determination and application
- Rudders and Steering systems to include blue checking and fitting, piano wire alignment method, stock straightness determination, hydraulic and pneumatic controls
- Bearings and Bushings to include lubrication types and methods, piano wire fit and alignment method, dial indicator alignment
- Engines, Motors, and Generators: diesel engines, gas or steam turbines, generators, motors, reduction gears, clutches, PTOs, mount arrangements, systems flushing, heat exchanger (shell/tube and plate/frame), heat exchanger and systems leak testing
- Propulsion Shafting to include CPP shafting, hydraulic couplings, clearance (water bearings), wear downs (oil bearings), Piano wire alignment method, dial indicator alignment, FRP spark test, bearing contact determination, shaft straightness (run out) determination
- Seals to include: gaskets, packing, and "O"-rings, lips & labyrinth, mechanical, tightness testing
- Valve work: leak testing, seat types, packing/gaskets/lubrication, lapping, seat types (materials and types),
- Propellers to include: Keyed, Tapered, Flanged & Key fits- Solid and Built, CPP Systems, Polishing
- K. Pumps to include: Valving (internal & external), Bearing & Sealing arrangements, Alignment (dial indicator & laser)
- Instruct lower classes of machinists;
manage work/personnel assignments;
requisition of job materials. - Deck machinery: gearboxes, bearings/seal arrangements, alignments, drivers (electric, mechanical, or hydraulic), sheaves, cables, turrets, booms
- Safety: safe handling/use/storage of gasses;
